Are you looking for a creative reset? Perhaps you'd like to build up a mindful art practice, or just find a new way to unwind? The upcoming Sashiko Stitch Challenge might be just what you've been looking for - even if you don't think you really have time for a stitching hobby!

From August 18-22, we'll spend five days going through each step of creating a mini hana fukin, or multi-purpose kitchen cloth. Whether you’re new to needle and thread or returning to your practice, this challenge offers a way to slow down and stitch something beautiful whilst connecting with the community.

What are we making?

In our challenge, we’ll be stitching a mini hana fukin together - a traditional Japanese multipurpose cloth that’s practical, beautiful, and the perfect introduction to the world of Sashiko. We have a blog post detailing what a hana fukin is here!

By the end of this challenge, you’ll walk away with:

  • A finished mini hana fukin stitched by your own hands

  • The foundational skills to explore Sashiko in future projects

  • A calm, mindful rhythm that you can carry over into everyday life

  • New connections in our creative community to support and inspire you

I'll guide you gently through all of the steps, right from the very beginning where we choose our tools and materials, through mindful stitching techniques as we progress through the project, all the way to finishing the last stitches and trimming the loose threads.

And if you're worried about not having the time to stitch, or not being good enough, I encourage you to put those thoughts to rest. We're here for progress, not perfection, and every step counts.

So how does it work?

Our challenge will take place from 18-22 August, 2025. Each day of the challenge, you’ll receive a short pre-recorded video tutorial (under 30 minutes) delivered to your inbox. This video will walk you through one step of the process, so that we're pacing ourselves and building a sustainable habit. Along with the video, you'll get a PDF of the instructions that you can download or print off, and your access to these videos and PDFs will not expire.

To inspire more community connection, we'll also have 'Sip and Stitch' style Zoom gatherings that you are welcome to join - we'll have two time options so that we can cover as many time zones as possible. These aren't necessary to attend, but they are a great place to get "face to face" with your fellow stitchers, ask any questions you might have, and show off your progress. These live sessions are optional, and will be recorded for anyone who can't attend!

You’ll also have access to a private challenge community where you can share your work, ask for feedback, and even win prizes just for participating - including a gift card from Snuggly Monkey or a membership to the Sashiko Stitch Club!

Finally, by participating in the Challenge, you'll also get discounts to some of our favourite Sashiko shops who are sponsoring the event - Snuggly Monkey, A Threaded Needle, Bittern by the Bug, and Japan Crafts! That way, if you're new to the craft or need some new supplies, you'll get about 10% off your materials.

How do you join?

I'm so glad you asked! The Sashiko Stitch Challenge is just $11 USD to join, and everything kicks off on August 18. Whether you’ve never stitched before or you’re looking to rekindle your creativity, this is a gentle, supportive, and encouraging place to begin.

Hi, I'm Kate!

I am a strong believer in starting where you are and using what you have, wherever and whatever that may be.

Everyone should get to experience the joy of connecting to others through learning, experimenting, and creating.

Creativity doesn’t have to be expensive or wasteful. Whether we’re using natural materials, reusing materials, or shopping our own stashes first, creating mindfully goes beyond being present in the moment - it extends to being mindful of our environment and the other communities around us, too.
